In defense of Newton's portrayal as Blackbeard: just because you might feel guilty about overindulging in some treat like ice cream or chocolate, don't deny that you enjoyed the experience. Likewise with respect to Blackbeard; the performance may have had some excesses, but don't deny that you enjoyed it! ho ho hee hee !!

Robert Newton's portrayal of Long John Silver in "Treasure Island" was without question one of the most memorable characterizations of all time. He didn't play Long John Silver, he was Long John Silver! I can't even imagine another actor ever playing that role. Only Basil Rathbone's portrayals of Sherlock Holmes or Raymond Massey's portrayal of John Brown in "Santa Fe Trail" come as close to assuming the identity of the characters they were portraying as Newton's assumption of the character of Long John Silver! May he and his old friend, the late, great David Niven, rest in peace!

I somewhat remember a famous line that I seen no mention of. Not sure of which film it was.Mr Newton was in his cabin with a woman. She mentioned something about a bath. To which Newton replied," you mean you get water all over you, on purpose" or something to that effect. It was a great line & I'd like to see it mentioned. Thanks..arrgg

Watching "Oliver Twist" for the first time on TCM the day after Thanksgiving, and noted Mr. Newton in the Bill Sikes role. Obviously I haven't seen enough of his portrayals, because if you had included it in the polling of his roles, I would have voted for Blackbear the Pirate!

RN's mother lived in Trewarveneth Street in Newlyn in the 1940's and Newton would occasianlly visit her and was a popular frequenter of the local pubs where he would entertain all with wit and charm. His Long John Silver accent is authentic west Cornwall which he must have picked as a schoolboy as he went to school in the area. Although I cannot vouch for the following, I understand he served on the ''lower deck'' when in the Royal Navy during the war and was a cook . Like LJS in Treasure Island.!!

Happy Centennial, Robert Newton! We be thinkin' o' ye today. I've been a big fan for many years of this great actor and always enjoy seeing him in anything, good or bad. In fact, right now, I'm going to watch(no, not "Treasure Island," although I've viewed it many times) "The Beachcomber(1955 version)," because I haven't seen it in a long while. Who knows, I may make it a month-long celebration and watch all the videos I have of him. Thanks, Susan, for this wonderful website dedicated to RN. And thanks to anybody else who supports and/or worships the magnificent Mr. Newton.

While I have been familiar with Robert Newton's image for quite awhile, I truly learned about Robert Newton through my love of Keith Moon. The resemblence is so striking. I have always loved Robert Newton's work as Long John Silver and was extremely thrilled when a friend gave me a 3 episode DVD of "The Adventures of Long John Silver." I surfed the internet looking for more episodes and found that only 13 of the episodes were released (at least to what I know). Does anyone know if all episodes are available and where can you get them (DVD or video)? The three episodes only whet my appetite to see all of them. What a performer! ! Whilst Robert Newton isn't the most well known actor (especially nearly 50 years after his death) I feel that he set the standards for others to achieve in the roles he played. Whilst Long John Silver is the most obvious example (when anyone does an impression of Long John, I take great pride in saying that they are actually doing an impression of Robert Newton playing him)any future portrayal of Bill Sikes will always be compared to his. This, perhaps more than anything, is the ultimate complement to anyone in any profession.

Digiview Productions has just released Long John Silver on DVD! Three TV episodes on a DVD and only priced for $1.00! The television series is from 1955 and it was filmed in COLOR, rare for a TV show from 1955. I hope Digiview will add all of the episodes, I liked the show. I first thought it was the second film filmed in 1954.

I got into Bobbie Newton basically through being a huge Keith Moon fan, and also the fact that Treasure Island is one of my favourite books. Robert Newton...one of those character actors that so many have enjoyed for so many years and so many have forgotten! Remember that sea-chanty rhyme he recited in the movie "Black Beard"..."There once was a jolly miller, who lived on the river Dee, he looked beneath his pilar and there he sawr a flea...ho ho he he he he..he chuckled in his glee!" I memorized that as a child and it still brings a SMILE to me. God Bless you Sir Robert! ~Lawrence the Red!

In response the the question regarding the movie 'The Snakepit', this movie was made in 1948 and starred Olivia DeHavilland, Mark Stevens, Leo Genn and Celeste Holm and took place in a psychiatric facility. I did not see Robert Newton listed in the cast. Is it possible that you are confusing this movie with Robert Newton's 'Obsession'(aka The Hiddle Room)in which he plays a psychiatrist?

I've never read on any website any comments about a movie starring Robert Newton called " Snakepit." He plays a psychiatrist in a mental hospital. I believe the leading lady is Maureen O'Hara. Probably filmed in the late '40s but not certain about that. Has anyone else seen this film?

I have a question for all you RN fans out there- I'm currently doing a production of 'Me and My Girl', an English comedy set in 1937. One of the scenes involves two characters talking about past history but getting it all wrong. Part of the dialogue is; "He put an apple on his head and said shoot father, I'm not afraid", to which I reply, "Aren't you getting that confused with Robert Newton and the pear tree?". I get the first part about William Tell, but what's the connection b/w RN and the pear tree? Please help- I'd like to know what I'm saying.

Hey! I loved Robert Newton's performance as Bill Sikes in Oliver Twist. Although I have never seen any other movies with Robert Newton, I must say he was quite interesting as the evil-insane boyfriend/theive/killer/psycho William Sikes in the Classic Novel Adaptation by David Lean. Ironically, as some might think that after watchin Oliver Twist the person would most remember Oliver. Although, John Howard Davies as Oliver was memorably amazing, I MUST say I remember Robert Newton the MOST as Billy Sikes. He really made cringe at certain parts of the movie, and I thought it was dark and cringing, and insane when David Lean showed him as kind of shown as the perfect "Elephant in the house senario". Example: When he sits on the chair darting at the children theives demanding them get a drink for him; and in reply Oliver gets him the drink. I wish, though that Robert's character did not have to accidentally hang himself with a rope and get shot by some stupid person in the crowd. It kinda sucks. Anyway, that's all I got to say about Robert Newton, and that is that he's AWESOME! Have a good day!;)

I was delighted when I found this site. Just like others, I had entered Robert Newton's name by chance, not really expecting to find anything, and there it was. Ever since viewing Treasure Island as a child I have always liked and admired this actor. I have seen a number of his films over the years on tv but they seem to have disappeared in recent years. I was delighted to find the links to his movies and I have purchased some of them. I am really enjoying watching every one of them. I hope more of his movies show up in DVD (or VHS). Although I had not seen a Robert Newton movie in years, just hearing his voice seemed like a long lost friend had returned. Thanks again for the site.

Being the right age when the great man did Long John on TV in this Country he will never be forgotten, when we played at being pirates all the boys wanted the broom so they could be Long John Silver. Thank you for the wonderful tribute to this charismatic man.Close reading reveals some interesting parallels with Robert Shaw who is mentioned in the site.Shaw's screen breakthrough (his stage reputation was considerable, and of the highest quality)was in ATV's "The Buccaneers", a tv series transmitted in 1956 in which he played Captain Dan Tempest. After playing Quint in "Jaws" he Made "Swashbuckler" playing pirate Ned Lynch and then pulled out his authentic Cornish burr (he spent much of his childhood in Truro) starring as Romer Treece in "The Deep" Shaw chewed up the scenery in all these roles and was a legendary drinker. He died of a heart attack in August 1978 in the arms of his wife at the age of 51.I think he has to be considered as a crucial link in the anchor chain that is Robert Newton's legacy.I hope you agree!

Found your site quite by chance after searching on Google for any sites on Robert Newton. I have just finished watching Long John Silver on TV. Newton was superb although the film itself left much to be desired. I too was inspired by R.L. Stevenson's Treasure Island as a boy and after reading it I proceeded to dig up all of my mothers garden looking for treasure. The fascinating thing for me about Newtons performance was the language he used. He obviously pulled heavily on his childhood in Cornwall for dialect inspiration. It's fair to say that a lot of the old English dialects are dying out. But at one time in England all those quaint phrases used by Newton in the film were in common use. Having lived in Cornwall and Devon I can assure you that some of them are still around! My wifes Nan is 92 and she still uses phrases that mystify the younger generation.. the plural of you is youm, your daughter or wife is maid and one guy I worked with in Cornwall exclaimed on a particulary frost morning "that's brave cold this mornin boy brave cold" Very Newton. I have lots of other phrases in my memory that I'll share another time. Well designed site and easy to navigate and read. Thanks.

Hi Susan, Thanks for the brilliant site on the subject of one of my favourite actors - much neglected, as many of your 'readers' have said. I've been looking for a biography of Robert Newton for some years via book searches, but none seem to have been written. Your biography, and other information on Robert are superb, many thanks on what you have achieved. My favourite Robert Newton role is his wonderful portrayal of the 'ordinary' husband/father/neighbour in 'This Happy Breed'. Thanks again for making my day/week/year!. I first saw Treasure Island a few years after it first came out, with my parents. My mother also loved RN and particularly appreciates broad, over-the-top comic characterizations. A few years later she took me to see a rerun of Blackbeard the Pirate and I remember that she informed me that the actor who played the part had recently died. I remember that I particularly liked the "Gather unto me" part. Since I was a child, I was quite taken with this farcically humorous villain. Newton has always remained persistently in my memory, as perhaps in those of many others who first saw him when we were children. For, as Long John he personified, I believe, a Jungian archetype taht resides in our collective unconscious. He was the terrifying and magnetic father figure, the boisterous, mutilated villain (like Richard III, Captain Ahab, etc.) who excites our fear but commands our respect and even a form of puzzled affection. It was fitting that Newton acted "with his ego" when he performed this type of role, because that is precisely where the secret power of the character resides. There are strong echoes of this also in his Ancient Pistol and in the deranged painter in Odd Man Out. And most darkly in Bill Sykes, who is pure villainy without humor. Your website was made by the heart and the intellect. It is a stunning piece of work: literate and loving, a complete delight. When I used "Robert Newton" as a keyword for the Google search engine I thought I despaired of finding a reference to this character actor whom I treasure (no pun intended). He has been unjustly neglected and stripped down to the generic "pirate voice," and subsumed into that same collective unconscious from whence his art came. Thank you for reviving the full image, illuminating the art, and vindicating the artist. It is a lovely tribute.

I think Robert was so much better in "the beachcomber" than in "vessel of wrath". The character of Honourable Ted gave Robert a much greater acting dynamic with which he created one of the great "characters" of movie history.

Hello there, I remember watching Treasure Island as a child and I saw a copy come up for sale on ebay, bought it on a whim and watched it this evening. What a magnificent performance by Robert Newton. Made me want to find out more about him. Found your site and the rest as they say is history. What a wonderful thing the internet is.

Sometimes the internet unearths some little treasures, and this is one of them...glad to see the great and robust actor so honoured; what a voice the man had; an actor with a fierce intellect but with a strange melancholy air. On the subject of imitations I found that at school if I affected a Newtonesque Long John accent a la keith Moon, there was no trace of my stammer; it was a total cure.

I very much enjoyed your page & read it with great enthusium. Robert Newton played a pivotal role in my youth, leaving me endelibly affected, (some might say scarred) during that great period of early Canadian TV. We were priviliged to watch Robin Hood (Richard Green & Archie Duncan), Ivanhoe (a baby Roger Moore) and of course Treasure Island. Many's the time in times of great stress, I've been known to exclaim "Them what (sic) dies be the lucky ones!" Keep up the interesting work.

One can only describe Mr. Robert "Bobbie" Newton as an Avatar in the art of portraying seafaring character, replicated but never duplicated, the only actor to even come close, in my opinion, was Robert Shaw, another best-of-the-best. (Imagine Newton in his prime playing the role of 'Quint' in Jaws.)Sadly God called him early, being a recovered alcoholic myself I know what a horrible disease it truly is. Mr. Newton was to the late 1600's early 1700's Carribbean, what clouds are to the sky, he would have been a wonderful person to have known. Godspeed my friend.

I had not seen the movie since I was a small child, but enjoyed it all the more, as I have been imitating his character for years. Enjoyed the site. I have the Treasure Island movie, and have seen Oliver Twist. He really performed well. One thing that I think you misquoted was when he gives the gun to Jim Hawkins and says that if he sees Black Dog again, I think he says "Repel Waters" not "Repel boarders". Hi there! This is a FANTASTIC site!! It is so great to see Robert Newton on the NET!!! After seeing Newton in Treasure Island when I was in 7th grade many years ago and years after that in Blackbeard and Long John Silver, I simply fell in love with him, lol. I have always been a fan of swashbuckling and pirate tales, and I have always felt that Robert Newton by far portrayed the best pirate. I have seen him in other movies and his skill as an actor is a cut above the rest. I am sure if he were living today, he would be honored to have witnessed a tribute as yours. Thanks for giving us R.N. fans something to hold on to! :) Your friend, Trisha :)

A great line that is missing from your website! In Blackbeard, when the doctor is taken down to see Blackbeard for the first time because he has to remove a bullet from him. The doctor is astounded and says (paraphrasing) "do you mean to tell me you've been walking around with this bullet in your neck all day!" and Newton says, "Arrr, a bullet don't weigh much." I love it.

Dear Sir, My father was a friend of Richard Burton. Few years before the great actor's death, my father bought one of his cars. It is the Marcedes-Benz 2 doors coupe that Richard Burton owned in the 70's in Switzerland until 1982. Since this time, the car has been stored. It is in original good state but will certainly need some mechanical servicing. I really don't know the relation between Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton during the 70's but I guess this could be a part of their lifes. The car has still all the papers in name of Richard Burton, Gstaad, Switzerland. For almost 20 years, my father has been storing the car and now he wants to sell it! Please write me in case of interest. Best regards, Marc Dimcovski, Geneva (Switzerland)

My childhood would not have been so exciting if it hadn't been for Robert Newton as "Long John Silver." His exploites in the TV series were always eagerly awaited. To me he presented an awsome figure of a wise, crankey but always just pirate. I was totally spellbound by his performances ....I just loved him to pieces; as I still do. No one has ever managed to surpass or even equal his performance as Long John. He can never be replaced and his memory will live on in us "kids of the fifties" till we are all gone.

Yes, the Treasure Island tv series defined my early childhood viewing - but in later years saw the b+w film "This Happy Breed" and realised he had the most melodic and modulated english accent too! That role of the father showed his humanity and gentleness and stayed the memory - I found his 'up-front' love of life most endearing and attractive and realised he was a one-off. I have long loved the acting of this amazing actor. Years ago, I believe, in the days before World War II, he and his sister operated the Shilling Theatre, on Barnes Bridge(?) in London. I was overjoyed to find such a well- researched and inclusive site, made by someone who quite obviously loved him as I did. Just happened on your Website. All I can say is, "Arrrrrrrr." 'Nuf said. Yes, a great actor. And cultural icon, although I wonder how many people realize it, i.e., does anyone, e.g., watching Mr. Krabs on "Sponge Bob Square Pants" realizes this cartoon owes his voice to Robert Newton's Long John Silver characterization. (Probably as many as realize that the Fruit Loops toucan is no doubt impersonating the voice of Ronald Colman.)
